ES 470: Chicanas/os-Latinas/os & Education
(#8185, seminar, 4 units). Wed., 6:10-10:00 PM, Instructor: Ochoa.
By centering the historical and institutional practices related to the schooling experiences of many Chicanas/os and Latinas/os in the U.S., this course examines the structure of our educational institution and the manifestations of power, privilege, inequality, and exclusion. This class is organized around discussions, readings, videos, workshops, interviews, and papers.'
This is a special course, taught by Dr. Gilda Ochoa, the 2015-16 Susan Currier Visiting Professor for Teaching Excellence.
Gilda Ochoa
For the past 20 years, Professor Ochoa has taught sociology and Chicana/o-Latina/o Studies at Pomona College. She is an award-winning teacher and the author of three books, including Academic Profiling: Latinos, Asian Americans, and the Achievement Gap (2013) which has received multiple awards for its focus on eradicating racism.
The following course is also being taught by Dr. Ochoa in winter quarter.
ES 340 Cultural Production and Ethnicity: Latino/a Studies
(#7896, lecture, 4 units). MW 2:10-4:00 PM, Instructor: Ochoa.
Culture and ethnicity as key factors in the production, perception, and interpretation of art and the humanities. Critical analysis of cultural attitudes and knowledge in expressive arts and cultural production, and of the contexts of cultural production as reflective of ethnicity. The Schedule of Classes will list topic selected. Fulfills GE C4 except for Comparative Ethnic Studies majors.
