Faculty and students are passionate about and committed to their work, which extends well beyond campus. Professor Grace Yeh and her students, for example, began the Re/Collecting project to capture previously untold stories of Japanese-, Filipino- and African-American communities from the Central Coast. Similarly, for her Africana Studies class, Professor Elvira Pulitano traveled with students to Ghana to study class topics firsthand.
The department’s size and ethos produce close connections between students and faculty and inspire active engagement on campus. From a hip-hop symposium on race and language in popular music and visiting speakers from Native American tribes, to multicultural documentary filmmakers, this energetic department contributes to the diversity and inclusivity of the Cal Poly community and the cultural competence of our students.
